NorZinc is currently developing the Prairie Creek Mine in the Northwest Territories.


Position Description

NorZinc Ltd, owner of the Prairie Creek Mine situated near Nahanni Butte in the Northwest Territories, has a temporary employment opportunity for an experienced Heavy Duty Mechanic. Reporting to the Site Manager, this position will be responsible for maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting of heavy equipment at the Prairie Creek Mine.

Responsibilities include:

  • Diagnose and perform repairs on diesel systems, reading and repairing hydraulic and electrical schematics and systems.
  • Perform repairs and assigned preventive maintenance services.
  • Perform inspection, diagnosis and repair of electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Estimate time and material costs on vehicle repairs and requisitions for new parts.
  • Conduct safety checks on vehicles.
  • Complete required paperwork associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with NorZinc / WSCC standards.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma and/or 15 years as a Heavy Duty Mechanic.
  • Experience working with older, 1980s-era equipment.
  • Experienced in engine rebuilds and inframes.
  • Experienced working in both a shop and the field.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical troubleshooting and repair.
  • Safety conscious, team-oriented, hardworking, and reliable.
  • Remote camp and Arctic weather experience, including the ability to work safely in extreme weather conditions.
  • Good physical condition, able to bend, lift/pull items weighing up to 23 kg and stand for long periods of time.

This is a seasonal, fly in/fly out camp position that will typically involve a four week in, four week out rotation and is expected to run until January 2022.

NorZinc provides a competitive day rate, work-related travel expenses, travel time and all food and lodging while on site at Prairie Creek Mine.
